The most important thing you need to read before we get too deep in the holiday season…

In the book How To Be Old there is an epilogue containing information on “aging subjects” that didn’t get a chapter of their own. One of those subjects is how to handle the insincere year-end greetings of “Are you ready for Christmas?” and “How was your Christmas?”

In “No Surrender” Bruce Springsteen sings, “We learned more from a three-minute record than we ever learned in school.” I went to school. I have a degree in Economics from Duquesne University. Any writing assignment that was required of me to write and submit, I did. But I didn’t learn to write in college.

I learned to write after college. A healthy dose of unemployment provided me the tools to “train my brain” to think the way a writer must think. Once I did that, and obtained objectivity in my thinking, I was able to write in a variety of formats, with merit, find employment (then a business), travel extensively and lead the life of a person with a creative soul.

I teach a unique writing class. What makes my class unique is that it focuses on the cathartic and ancillary benefits of writing. I’ve taken advantage of those benefits in numerous ways. A list of those benefits can be found in my book, How To Be Old. All for-profit, non-profit and government entities should be offering writing programs for their executives and employees—regardless of their position in the organization and/or their age.
